The Fifth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals has upheld that a dog's sniffing of students' lockers in school hallways and automobiles parked in school parking lots does not constitute a search within the meaning of the fourth amendment, and therefore is not unconstitutional. School officials do not need a warrant or probable cause prior to conducting a search. They only need reasonable suspicion that the search will turn up evidence that the student broke the law or the rules of the school.
